John Calvin said “The human heart is a perpetual idol factory” which is to say that we have all the raw materials we need - to mass produce them. We take God’s gifts - good things and put them on the pedestal of our heart and make them ultimate things - by giving them our worship through our time and talent.
Our hearts are fully automated - they keep producing idols even when we’re not paying attention! Mine apparently runs three shifts, never closes, and keeps introducing new product lines.
So it’s not really a question of if we have idols - but what do we do about them? The answer is God ... but not just belief in the existence of God - it's about experiencing the blessing of God and Jacob's story from the bible is a great example of someone who encountered God and that was the antidote for his idols.
